What’s Up and Coming at GCAC this August
Registration is now open: Writing Intensive Courses August 30 and 31
The Graduate Centre for Academic Communication (GCAC), formerly known as ELWS, will be offering two-day intensive versions of both the “Writing NSERC Proposals” course and of the “Writing SSHRC Proposals” course. Both courses will begin on the morning of Wednesday, August 30 and end on the afternoon of Thursday, August 31. The courses are eligible for GPS credit, and allow students to get individual feedback on their proposal drafts. While any student applying for SSHRC or NSERC Master’s or doctoral grants this fall is welcome to register, these sections of the courses are intended primarily for incoming students who will be applying for grants for the first time.
The courses run from 9:30 am–5 pm on August 30 and from 9:30 am–1 pm on August 31 with breaks, and they combine instruction and silent writing time. For more information, please visit the GCAC Boot Camps and Writing Intensives section of the GCAC website. Online registration for either course is now open (please expand “+Eligibility & Registration Procedures” to access the registration link). Students are asked to register ONLY if they can attend the full course (7.5 hours on August 30 and 3.5 hours on August 31).
Writing Centre Consultations
One-on-one consultations are available for graduate students who seek individualized assistance with their writing. In these 40-minute sessions, trained instructors work with you to improve your capacity to plan, write, and revise your academic assignments. Instructors do not edit for you; they teach you to revise and edit your own work. The appointments can be booked online. Appointments are usually released for booking two to three weeks in advance of the actual appointment dates. Appointments will resume in mid-August.
New GCAC listserv
We will be phasing out the ELWS listserv gradually. To subscribe to the new GCAC listserv, send an email to listserv@listserv.utoronto.ca (upper or lower case is acceptable). In the BODY of the message, type a command of the form: subscribe gcac-l firstname lastname
You will then receive a “Command Confirmation Request” email. You must reply to that email with “ok” written in the body of the email. Doing so will complete the subscription process. Please note: If you have an automatic signature in your email, please remove it when sending and replying to listserv@listserv.utoronto.ca.
For more information on the offerings listed above, please visit the GCAC website.
