Flexible Futures Workshops for Graduate Students

Grad Career Educator AMA – Job Search and Career Exploration (Online)

May 15, 1–1:30 p.m.

June 25, 4–4:30 p.m.

August 5, 12–12:30 p.m.

This Ask Me Anything (AMA) session for master’s and PhD students and postdocs will focus on job search and career exploration strategies. The Graduate Career Educator from Career Exploration & Education will answer your questions and direct you to additional resources on best practices for job searching and career exploration.

PhD Skills Day: Transferable Skills for Non-Academic Careers (In-person)

May 30, 10 a.m.– 5 p.m.

Join us for a full day of activities to support PhD students and postdocs in understanding and communicating your skills for non-academic jobs. The day will include:

    • Presentations exploring transferable academic skills from teaching and research
    • Activities designed to help you reflect on your unique experiences, skills and strengths
    • Opportunities to learn how to better communicate your skills through interviews, networking, LinkedIn and your application documents
    • A living library, where alumni share their experiences and how they use the skills they acquired during their graduate studies in non-academic careers

Research Your Career (Online)

June 17, 10 a.m.–12 p.m.

In this workshop, you will learn how to apply your research skills to explore career options and all aspects of the job search process from networking to creating job application materials and interviewing.

Cultivate Your Career Community of Support in Academia & Beyond (In-person)

July 10, 2–4 p.m.

This in-person session for master’s and PhD students and postdoctoral fellows is a space to explore cultivating a community of support for both academic and non-academic careers. If you have found concepts like networking tricky or complicated or are not sure how to build a career community of support, this is the session for you.

 

Navigate Your Career in Academia: An Overview of the Academic Job Search

August 15, 12–1:30 p.m.

This workshop is aimed at PhD students and postdoctoral fellows interested in pursuing careers as university faculty. The session will provide a general overview of the academic job search process, including types of positions, hiring timelines, and components of the academic dossier. You will gain a better understanding of what to expect when applying for academic positions and will leave with resources to support you as you prepare your application documents.
