Q21: A CONVERSATION CAFÉ – THE COOL KIDS IN SCHOOL: QUEER STYLES & SELF-EXPRESSION

Thursday, January 14, 2021

3:00 pm – 4:30 pm (EST)

Zoom Video Conference (Register for more details)

Q21 in 2021! Our first session of the new year is about self-expression and the diversity of queer styles! What does “queer style” mean to you? Personal style and expression are difficult things for queer folks: queer fashion trends are constantly being appropriated by straight culture; we’re forced to choose between visible outness or stealth; our sexuality and bodies are perpetually scrutinized, and yet we’re still ICONS, Every. Single. Day. Come chat with us about self-expression, and maybe give us some style-inspo! See you there (fierce looks not required, but encouraged).

We are excited to welcome Vada Sitaram to facilitate this conversation!

Vada is a queer, non-binary Hairstylist at Fox & Jane Salon Toronto, the founding salon of the Dresscode Project -a global alliance of salons/shops committed to providing positive, gender-affirming services for the LGBTQ2S+ community . With 6 years of experience behind the chair, Vada is passionate about providing a safe and comfortable environment for folks across the gender spectrum. They encourage clients to explore, express and reimagine their personal style through hair.

Q21 is a weekly conversation café to discuss the questions you want to talk about. Connect with students and guest facilitators as we share our thoughts, experiences and the questions that keep running through our minds. Each week will have a theme, though everyone is welcome to share their ideas and bring questions. Learn more about Q21: A Conversation Café.

Registration is required. By registering you will be signing up to receive Zoom details for all of the Fall-Winter 2020-21 Q21 weekly sessions. These are drop-in events, so you are welcome to attend whichever session you would like. If you would like to be removed from the Q21 events mailing list, email us at sgdo@utoronto.ca at any time.

GENDER TALK: OUR FAMILIES & OURSELVES

Friday, January 15, 2021

12:00 pm – 1:30 pm (EST)

Zoom Video Conference (Register for more details)

  • What kind of pressures do you experience around your family?
  • Has the pandemic changed the way you think about and interact with your family? If so, how?
  • How do we hold space in ourselves for the way our relationship with our family has changed, and will change in the future?

Welcome to the first Gender Talk session of the Winter semester! In this session, we will discuss the ways that being trans and nonbinary complicates our relationships with our family. Familial relationships also change and evolve over time, due to a variety of reasons, and we will reflect on the ways that we navigate these changes.

Registration is required. By registering you will be signing up to receive Zoom details for all of the 2020-21 Gender Talk sessions. These are drop-in events, so please feel free to join whichever sessions you would like. You can unsubscribe to these emails at any point. For more information, reach out to us at sgdo@utoronto.ca.

QUEER & TRANS STUDENTS OF COLOUR DISCUSSION: FOODS OF THE WORLD

Friday, January 22, 2021

2:00 pm – 4:00 pm (EST)

Zoom Video Conference (Register for more details)

  • What does family mean to you as a queer and/or trans person of colour (QTPOC)?
  • How have your interactions with family changed during the pandemic?
  • What activities are you looking forward to doing with your loved ones during the holiday season/winter break as a QTPOC? What new traditions do you want to build for yourself?

LGBTQ2S+ students of colour are invited to build community, socialize, and engage in discussion during November’s edition of the Queer & Trans Students of Colour (QTSOC) Discussion program. On Friday, November 20th, we will explore topics such as how we as QTSOC define family, how our interactions with family have changed during the pandemic, and how we experience the holiday season as QTSOC.

This event is organized as part of Queer & Trans Students of Colour (QTSOC) Discussion series, a monthly ongoing series to invite LGBTQ2S+ students of colour and students questioning their gender and/ or sexual orientation together in a confidential space to share stories and ideas as we build community. Come and tell us what you think would help to create more positive spaces and more inclusive conversations! Learn more about QTSOC discussions and events.
