This event was co-hosted by SRI, the Vector Institute for Artificial Intelligence, the School of Cosmic Future at the Faculty of Arts & Science, and the Department of Computer Science at the University of Toronto. The lecture was given exclusively in person, so the publication of this video is the first opportunity for a broader public to absorb Professor Hinton’s scholarly talk and the engaging Q&A session that followed.
Professor Hinton spoke about—and took queries on—the key differences between biological and digital intelligence, whether large language models such as ChatGPT understand what they are doing, and the existential risks posed by unfettered development of the technology he helped create.
