Free academic courses for all stages of your graduate degree

The Graduate Centre for Academic Communication (GCAC) offers advanced training in academic writing and speaking through free, non-credit graduate Courses, Workshops, Writing Centre consultations, and Boot Camps.

In May to June 2025, we are offering a wider range of courses to support students at every stage of their graduate degrees. Each course runs for two hours a week for three to six weeks.

For students in the later stages of their degree, we offer thesis-writing, publishing, and revision courses:

• TH 1/2 — Thesis Writing in the Humanities and Social Sciences (Divisions 1 and 2)
• NPP — Navigating the Publishing Process
• GW2 — Graduate Writing 2: Revising for Clarity

For students early in the writing process, we offer prewriting and foundational graduate writing courses to provide you with practical strategies for improving your writing:

• PRE — Prewriting Strategies for Developing and Organizing Your Ideas (All Divisions​)
• GW1 — Graduate Writing 1: Establishing Your Foundation

The GCAC also offers speaking courses. Academic Conversation Skills is for multilingual students who want to build more confidence in listening and speaking. Oral Presentation Skills is for students who want to improve their course presentations, conference presentations, and academic job talks:

• OPS — Oral Presentation Skills

Grant-writing courses in May/June provide expert guidance to students who will be applying for funding from one of the federal agencies – SSHRC, CIHR, or NSERC – in the Fall of 2025:

• CIHR — Writing CIHR Proposals
• NSERC — Writing NSERC Proposals
• SSHRC — Writing SSHRC Proposals

 Our upcoming 90-minute live online workshops, beginning May 15, are available for registration. On-demand workshops are always available.

40-minute Writing Centre consultations are available every week.

In June, we are offering a 3-day Dissertation Boot Camp and a 2-day Research Article Boot Camp, providing a combination of guidance and distraction-free writing time within a supportive community of fellow students. Click each boot camp title for more details and to register interest.
