Data Sciences Speaker Series – Just Machine Learning with Prof. Tina Eliassi-Rad
Tina Eliassi-Rad, inaugural President Joesph E. Aoun Professor at Northeastern University. She is a core faculty member at Northeastern’s Network Science Institute and the Institute for Experiential AI. In this talk, Tina will argue that studying AI ethics should consider complex systems, emphasizing that machine learning systems are interconnected with broader social, economic, and political systems. She advocates for removing optimization blinders, suggesting a shift from solely maximizing expected utility. Tina will provide examples, including the impact of misinformation on democracy, challenges in interventions for information access equality, and potentially touch on algorithm use in school admissions.
This talk is co-sponsored by the Data Sciences Institute and the Centre for Analytics and Artificial Intelligence Engineering (CARTE), University of Toronto.
